Chinese New Year

I've listed below some websites with interactive activities and videos to show your class. These would be good to share together in your classrooms, or could be used as lessons in the ICT suite. The BBC Learning Zone Class Clips website has many more videos about China here
Yong's China Quest Adventure is a fantastic game for children to play and learn about aspects of China as they solve puzzles. Probably suitable for p4 and up.
One of my favourites - The Poisson Rouge website has a section with Mandarin here where children can click on pictures and hear how to say the word in Mandarin - while best for nursery, P1 and P2, this would probably be great for all ages!
The fab Language of the Month website (which Jane mentioned at our development session recently) can be found here, and has Cantonese and Mandarin. These would be great to use on your Smartboards.
The Mylo website has some activities that children could work through on their own in the ICT suite. While the site is designed for Secondary school, children in P5-7 would probably manage some of the simpler activities.

Safer Internet Day

There's a list of resources available if you'd like to do any lessons on Internet Safety here Some of the highlights:
For nursery, P1 and P2 there's an interactive book and lesson plans with Smartie the Penguin here.
For P3 and up, the Smart Crew resources look good.
For older pupils, I really like the look of the Facebook privacy settings checklist - this would be great for discussion. While our pupils shouldn't be on Facebook, I think it's worthwhile discussing the complexities of the privacy settings and why the site is unsuitable for under 13s. You can download it here along with guidance on how to control Facebook privacy settings. Think U Know, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre's website has resurces for all ages, and this year have made an interactive video about older children trying to post videos online to get a million hits, in which you get to decide what happens. You can watch the trailer below.

Safer Internet Day - Quick and easy resources

This Tuesday (5th February) is Safer Internet Day. A great way to get your class to think about internet safety would be to use the images at Teaching Ideas and using these as a basis for co-operative group or class discussions. It could take five minutes or as long as you like, but no matter how long it will be worthwhile. Some of the images (Please check Teaching Ideas for more):
